The poster of this meme gave a comment that they hate religion because of things like this. If someone looked at this and only read through the first five chapters of Genesis I could absolutely see that this is a ridiculous notion and story, as the Bible only talks about 3 kids that were direct descendants of Adam and Eve. Cane, Abel and Seth were the only children named after the fall (sin entered the world) before the great flood. So how were there more people on the Earth when this is the case?
What I am about to share at this point is both my opinion using scripture. I should also point out this I believe that the Holy Bible is infallible, inerrant, and is the true Word of God. Moses who wrote the first five books of the Bible; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy; it is believed that these books were not only written by Moses, but also that God dictated to him as Moses. So, for you to agree with this theory you must understand that I am coming from a Biblical standpoint. I will refer to scripture from time to time and will cite these accordingly. I will also cite other sources and again will note that appropriately. However, many of the things I am going to discuss that do not have reference or cited work are my opinion and are to be taking with a grain of salt.
What qualifies me to give this deep seeded discussion? Well, I went to a Bible College Liberty University to get my bachelor’s degree; however, I did not get a religion or bible degree. I was required to take some form of biblical studies including how to study the Bible. I also am a Christian and have been for a very long time which means I have the Holy Spirit within me. I have also been studying the bible for several years. That being said, I am not qualified in the sense of formal trained but I am qualified in my inspired studying and revelations that the Holy Spirit provides.
The question is:
- How did Adam and Eve have only 3 sons and the Earth became populated?
- How did Adam live to be 930ish years old?
I will tackle both of these questions one at a time. Let’s start with the first question in regard to how the Earth became populated with only the mentioning of 3 sons. Yes, last time I checked you have to have a male and female in order to procreate and create a new life. So, if Eve was the only women did her sons have children with her as well?
I do not know that answer specifically nor do I know how many children that Adam and Eve have? There are some clues though that show us that they may have had multiple offspring. Let’s take a look at what God said to Eve after the fall.
Genesis Ch 3:16 says:
To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”
That is what God tells Eve (one of the first covenants in the Bible), so why would God say this? I mean besides the obvious of pain and toil you must endure because of your disobedience. Beyond the obvious why would God tell Eve anything about child birth, unless Eve has already had the pleasure of conceiving a child. If Eve has not had any kids prior to the fall, why would it matter if she knew child bearing pains or not? This would only make sense of you have already experienced having children and being in the perfect garden that the Lord made for His creation. So, maybe Adam and Eve had been in the garden for several generations and had several 100 or even 1000s of offspring.
The second part of this question is if Adam and Eve had many children beyond what we see in the Bible, then did they have sex and what we would refer to as insest? Well yes, but not like you may think.
Remember we are in a perfect and sinless location prior to the fall of man.
The Garden of Eden was created as a place to work, worship, and commune with God. It was a perfect utopia where there was no sin or no pain. So, if there was no sin and God intended for us to fruitfully and increase in number then insest was not a sin. There was no law that tells you can or cannot do these things. The only command that was in place was not to eat of the two tree’s one was the tree of good and evil and the other was the tree of knowledge (this was a test from God, so we are not forced to obey him, I will save this for another post). So, they were free to have relations with each other to be fruitful, which I think they did. The real question for me is, how long were they in the Garden of Eden?
Now on to question number two which asks how did Adam live to be 930. This is a theory, but Adam was created from the hands of God and was virtually perfect in every way. It says in Genesis 2:7 that God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life” and so I think that because of this, it made Adam superhuman (not special powers, just physically healthy). I think up until just a few years after the flood everyone had that in them to live a long life into very old age. You can read about this in Genesis. However, in Genesis Ch. 6 it talks about how God will not contend with the wickedness of man and his days will be numbered to 120 years. Once the floodgates of heaven opened (which was the first time it rained on Earth).
This is my theory, I think that there sustained water that protected and surrounded the Earth and no outside entities such as radiation and/or other harmful waves that would excel the deuteriations of body. Once the floodgates were opened and the waters of the deep came to be, caused the entire atmosphere (as we know today) to create the seasons that we have now. This caused man over time after generations were born to now be limited to the 120 year lifespan.
